this is the status of the support for ati for 4.1 and 3.3.6
basically your card should be supported by both version (OK there are these ominous 
two letters
after the mach64...)
Theoretically the ati driver should solve your problem in 4.x and (unknown to me) 
there seem to be
a way to use an ati driver for XF86_SVGA. Anyhow, the XF86_SVGA IS accelerated, 
possibly you have
to specify it in the config file...
Alzeimer strikes again and I cannot remember whether you posted both your XF86Config 
resp.
XF86Config-4 and a log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log would do)
