There is a possibility that your card be not supported by 4.x.x look at 
www.xfree86.org > Support, Documentation and Resources > XFree86-4.2.0 Current Release
documentation  > Driver Status for XFree86[tm] 4.2.0 > S3
There was a post on that subject a week or two ago (use google on the list)
In some cases people ended up downgrading to v3.3.6 in order to have acceleration
In any case, with v 4.x.x, the vesa driver (regretably not accelerated) might solve 
your problem
better than fbdev...
