OK 'id:5:initdefault:' tells your system that runlevel 5 is the default.
Do you have the line in inittab that actually starts X in runlevel 5? In my file I 
have;

x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

(Im running Mandrake, but there should be no big difference...)

my wag is that the autostart is failing. i have noticed that my
suse also puts out the login prompt,but immediately switchs
screens and spawns the kde.

when i broke my x server earlier this week, that is the
behaviour i got, after a boot, i got a tty1 login, but
no switch and gui startup.

what i've not found is where gui startup errors are recorded.
/var/log/* seems to be clueless about what has gone wrong.
