I was the "Xtremely frustrated Debian newbie" who posted a while back. Thanks to everyone for the helpful responses. I have decided to switch to Mandrake, both to lessen my learning curve and so that I can use my current video card. In other words I am swallowing my geekish pride and going with the "easy" one...
