I agree with the answer. what happens is that in your screen section you don't have a 
display
subsection which is usable.
 The cause can be in that section, for instance you specify default depth of 24 and 
you don't have
a corresponding display subsection.
More likely the problem lies with you device section and either an unrecognised or 
wrongly
recognised card. Check that and the log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log)
