It would be interesting to know which version of X you run (if it's 3.3.x then your card may be not supported...) I don't know freeBSD well enough to be of more help as to where the log is stored (in Linux it's in /var/log/XFree86.0.log on top is the version number) doing X -version (in Linux) also gives you the version...
