XFree86 4.x seems to have less video cards currently supported than 3.x, so i'd check this list for compatible cards: http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.1/RELNOTES4.html#13 I just got a $10 matrox mystique card on the weekend at a pc swapmeet to add an extra head to X.
