I don't import a letter, I just copy and paste.  It's easy to play with the
layout and make the text fit into it;  use the tool shaped like an arrow on
the left side in layout mode.  I also scroll back and forth between layout
mode and preview mode to see what it's going to look like, and print a lot
of test copies (making sure to only print one page!).
As far as inserting merge fields, Ebase does this for you in its existing
letter layouts.  But you can add your own fields (such as a donation amount
for a thank you) by clicking and dragging on the box marked "fields" on the
left hand side of the layout.  This will bring up a pop-up menu from which
you can select the fields and where they come from (Names, Payments, etc.)
Hope this helps.  Play around with the layouts, and look at your ebase
manual.  The more familiar you get with ebase and filemaker the more you can
do.
