What make of GPS do you have? Don't worry too much about comparing your traces to others. A lot of people set their gps to 1 point per second. This is only practical on devices with SD card storage. It is certainly possible to make a map from a lot less providing you are careful about corners and junctions when out on a mapping trip. Experience will help with that.
