Not sure why opening the file manually didn't show it, but if you are downloading stuff with JOSM then remember to tick the "Raw GPS data" on the download screen. It took me ages to realise I hadn't got it ticked when I tried mapping on my parents computer over Christmas and couldn't work out why it wasn't working like the copy I use here at home did.
