Probably not what you want to hear but I'd go for a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx GPS, not the cheapest but very accurate and not too bad a price.
If you have a dig on the wiki there is a scheme to lend GPS devices and my understanding is a number have been lent to India and surrounding countries in the past.
