I would have thought
that in the long run, the closed way is better than the single node,
which is just a compromise until someone has more time to trace out
the whole area.

Although I agree that is the correct way, one disadvantage of it is that
if you have an L shaped area the label doesn't display within the
boundaries.
I realise this is a problem for the renderers to solve, but I think it
should be noted.
