Richard, One thought I have had on this is that it may be me that broke it and not you - the coastlines used by mapnik are only re-generated occasionally, so it I broke the coastline somehow, the issue might not have appeared until later, so it may be coincidence that you saw it after your edits.
I am still a bit bemused though because as far as I can tell from the mapnik style files, beaches should be drawn after the land, so should appear on top even if there is something odd about the coastline file. When I render the data myself it looks ok.....but I update my coastline data even less frequently... Graham. -- Graham Jones Hartlepool, UK.
