This message http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-vfs-list/2003-January/msg00005.html would seem to indicate that nautilus can be convinced to be an sftp client with the right plugin compiled and installed! Personally I just use scp. It's much more efficient than sftp because it works more like cp. Sometimes the command line is the best way.
