What kind of movie are you trying to play?  You need to have mplayer
compiled with the right dll's or codecs or whatever you call them for
things like widows media and quicktime.  I don't know if the emails from
this list have been put into an archive lately, but Richard Esplin
posted some nice instructions for getting mplayer all compiled with the
right stuff to watch wma and quicktime about a week ago.  I still have
the email if you don't.  

If you happen to be using Mandrake 9 you don't have to compile anything,
you can add the Penguin Liberation Front to your sources (search google
for easy urpmi) and then just type (as root) urpmi mplayer and you will
get mplayer with all the good stuff.
