[newbies] dvd player

I've downloaded gmplayer and it pulls up just fine, ...i have a link to my 
dvd player on my desktop.  The problem now is getting gmplayer to actually 
play my dvd.  i get the following error.  Error opening/initializing the 
selected video_out(-vo)device.

I assume this means that i need to tweek some setting, but i am not familiar 
with which settings i need to change.
