I've got a hub and two computers with Mandrake 9.1 on them. I want to be
able to share files, printers, drives, you name it, and to be able to ssh or
vnc from one to the other. I would like to make one a file server or
something eventually. Right now they're both connected to the hub which has
it's "uplink" port in the jack which connects me to the ever-popular Off
Campus Communications, and I've got internet access for both of them through
that.
But aside from pinging each others regretibly non-static ip addresses, I
can't seem to do much as far as communication between the two is concerned.
Netconf might be useful, but for some reason it won't start on either
machine, at least in X.

# netconf
Error message from remadmin :Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Error message from remadmin :Xlib: No protocol specified
Error message from remadmin :
Error message from remadmin :
Error message from remadmin :Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0

I'll try it from a true terminal sometime, since I think I remember hearing
there's a shell version. I finally got both boxes to have the hostnames I
wanted, but that's about it. I'd been messing around with Samba before, but
it seems like NFS would be way better between two linux boxes. I can't find
anything on the net that makes sense to me that tells me how to go about
setting that up.
Why can't I ssh from one machine into the other, if I know the user account
and password and ip address? (Though shouldn't I be able to use the hostname?
But it doesn't detect it)
I've tried to give them both the same domain name in /etc/hosts and
/etc/sysconfig/network, but I don't think they're really in the same domain.
This is annoying me because I thought I could figure all this out with a
little web help, but I've come to realize how little I know about networking
in general. I think it would be easier if it was JUST a local network
without the internet connection, but that would be lame.

        Thanks,

 -James
