You should have an rpm for openssh-server, openssh-clients, and a few
others that apt will install with those (rpm -qa | grep ssh to see what
you have) installed on each machine and then make sure sshd is running,
try something like this as root (assuming redhat or mandrake):

service sshd start

and do that on each machine.  You should then be able to ssh
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and log into your machine.  If that works then you
should be able to use scp to copy files back and forth.
