I seem to be having a problem with the date command. I am running a server (non GUI) install of RH 9 and after the recent change from daylight savings time to normal time I wanted to make sure that the time was set correctly on my machine. When I logged in as a normal user the date was appearing as a UTC date such as: “Mon Oct 27 08:45:14 UTC 2003”. As the root user I used “ntpdate” to set the time. I also ran “timeconfig” to ensure that I was setup in the right time zone. At that point there was an option to check a box saying: “System clock uses UTC”. What does that box mean? I know that UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), but the date command seemed to work the same whether I checked that box or not.

Anyway, I was able to correct the date and time so that it would display in Pacific Time, “Mon Oct 27 08:45:14 PST 2003” as root, but when I ran “date” as any other user the date and time still displayed as “Mon Oct 27 08:45:14 UTC 2003”. I tried rebooting the machine after setting the time correctly, but that did not work. My non root user account uses several date and time calls that need to return the correct time. Does anybody know how I can fix this problem?

Thanks,

Dave Christensen
