Sorry if this is a repost. I thought I posted this yesterday, but I
have not heard anything back, and am not certain the post was
successful.

I just installed Red Hat on a desktop and have been having troubles
with the monitor. When I'm in the command line, the monitor works
fine. Then, when I open XWindows, the screen is off center, and i
have to manually reconfigure it. After that, if I open tux racer or
something else like that, it works until I get out of the game, at
which point it is back to the same configuration it was at before i had
centered the screen.
Also, if i leave XWindows and open it again, it's off center again, (in
the same place)... i'm guessing from the way it is manifesting itself
that this is not a hardware-related issue because it seems that the
software is reconfiguring the monitor settings... is there any way to
fix it? i'm running KDE with RedHat 8... current screen resolution is
W1280x768...
thank you so much!!!

I have seen some pretty weird behavior from my monitor (ebay special).
I'd look for the following:
1> Look for a button on the monitor that causes the monitor to automatically
adjust itself, on my monitor it is called AutoSize.
1b. I've seen displays shift off center under MS Windows when the refresh
frequency for the monitor is changed. Check to make sure the monitor type
you selected is what your monitor really is. System Settings > Display >
Advanced.
2> Try a lower screen resolution, like 1024 by 768.
3> You could also try a Generic monitor type that matches the capabilities
of your monitor.
4> If all else fails, pop the cover off your PC and make sure you know
exactly what chipset your video card uses and make sure that is what is
selected in the Display properties. Check the video memory setting too.
5> Upgrade to RedHat 9. You can get CDR's of RH 9 froom the CS admins for
cost of CD's. That is what I've heard.

There are a lot of people on this list and maybe someone will have a more
specific answer for you. Seems to me that not many people are using the
newbies list.

Hope this all helps.
