You can not keep a "terminal" because that depends on X. You can,
however, switch to "console" only mode.

On Redhat/Fedora or a similar distro:

"init 3" will temporarily switch you to full services minux X. Be aware,
however, that it will stop and start services besides just X.

You can modify /etc/inittab to make 3 your permanent run level.
Just change
id:5:initdefault:
to
id:3:initdefault:

Some distros have different opinions of which run level means what.
