Ok it's going to take a little bit of learning to get this to go, it's
not hard, but it can be a little frustrating.

Ok you're going to need to start out with a desktop with a TV input
card, quite a bit of extra disk space (like 10 gig or so) and linux
successfully installed on it.

Ok first off is the hardware:
You need a TV input card. I use a a card called WINTV that uses the
Hauppauge chipset. It's a good card. People have reported that the WinTV
Go card works well:
http://www.hauppauge.com/html/products.htm#pci

Ok so after you have gotten a working tv card, install the program
tvtime.

#apt-get install tvtime

when you run tvtime you should be able to watch tv, or watch a video
from a vcr that is now connected to your Computer.

Ok once you get to this point we can continue to go from here with
recording tv onto your computer. I have a lot of fun with this. When I
see a program on TV that I want to record, I just run a command on my
desktop. It records it to DIVX format, and if I want to convert it to an
SVCD after that, It's pretty easy.

Ok the big disclaimer:
Doing this stuff on Linux is not the easiest thing in the world. There's
not a simple justdoit program for it. I am in the process of writing
some scripts to make it easier, When you're ready to start recording
those scripts should be ready.
