[newbies] Installing Programs

Ok, this is a simple one I think. How do I install stuff? I have downloaded 
things like eclipse ide, alsaplayer, and the j2re. Some are .gz, some are 
.zip, and others are binary files. How do you install these things? There 
isnt a readme file for some, and the others dont help. Thanks
