Something is wrong with you're configuration. eth0 is your first ethernet
card and eth1 would be the second. 'ifup ethx' brings up that network cards
link, and likewise 'ifdown ethx' takes it down (the 'if' stands for 
interface). So, I guess you must have two cards, and eth0 isn't working
(not plugged in?) and eth1 isn't being brought up automatically. Look in
the files /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethx to see what's going on.
If you still can't figure it out, send the contents of those files and what
you're network setup should be.
