I've been working on a problem for awhile now, and I could use some advice..

We have a test server running red hat 9 I think, and it had some partitions really
screwed up. It had like 20 gig set up just to be the /var/tomcat4 directory, and we
wanted to install tomcat5. My idea was to back up and then delete the /var and the
/var/tomcat4 partition, and then create a new /var partition with all the remaining
space. I did so, and it turns out that the computer can't boot up. It ends up
saying "Kernel panic: no init found, try passing init= option to the kernel." What
files are needed to boot up the system. I have everything backed up, so nothing will
be lost, and I can reinstall everything if I need to, only I'm not an expert at
setting up a server, so I'd rather not. Nothing is corrupted, but when I went back in
to reformat the /var directory, all of the mount points were confused (the disk druid
didn't have a mount point for them). I reset them, and formatted the new extended
partition for /var, and now it shows up when I use knoppix.

If I copy the old files from the /var directory will it work as normal? What do I
need to do?

thanks!
