I recommend Mandrake if you are new, but really the best distro is the one your close friends use. If you are pioneering the way into Linux amongst your buds, then mandrake, suse, or fedora (redhat) are all good choices for starting out. Out on the web you'll find lots of help with mandrake and fedora. I'm not as experienced with Suse, but it looks very newbie friendly.
