codec is short of code/decode, or something like that. It's the magic that let's your media player play your media. In order to play DVD's you either need to buy commercial DVD player software, or use some free codecs whose legality is questioned by some in the US. You are lucky you are using Mandrake. Though they don't distribute the DVD codecs themselves, a group of Mandrake enthusiats called the Penguin Liberation Front (PLF) do distribute them. They supply what's called a urpmi repository. urpmi is a tool Mandrake uses to automate software installation. With the help of this website: http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ It's pretty easy to get urpmi all set up. You might want to read Jake's wonderful tutorial on the matter here also: http://uug.byu.edu/articles.php?article=63 I recommend the mirror.cs.wisc.edu mirror, it's always worked well for me. Add main, contrib, updates, most importantly plf sources. Then type urpmi.update -a && urpmi --auto-select If all goes well it will offer to download and install a lot of updates. It should install the plf versions of totem/mplayer/kaffeine and you will be able to play your DVD. If you have any more questions just ask, this can all be a bit much at once.
