In Gnome, run Preferences>More Preferences>Sessions and under the
Startup Programs tab add gkrellm. KDE has something similiar. I'll let
someone else tell you where to find it.

Putting it in your .bash_profile doesn't work because it doesn't get
read when you do a graphical login.
