I was a lurker for quite a while before I became an active member of the UUG, so I sympathize with your concern. I have a few ideas for how I'd like to increase the benefit of the UUG to those who are currently lurkers. 1) When I first entered the UUG, I was somewhat intimidated because I felt like I had no understanding of the topics that were being covered in meetings. If elected, starting in the fall, I'd like to add 1 meeting per month that would be focused toward newbies and those above the newbie level. I have not yet determined what the exact format of these meetings would be, but I am considering having them cover the basic ideas behind the other meetings of the month. If elected, I will come up with some options, and will allow the club to vote and choose first, whether there is any desire for this additional "newbies" meeting, and second, what types of topics they would be interesting in covering. 2) I think that it's great to have a large number of people in the mailing-list. My guess is that the majority of lurkers gain their primary benefit from the mailing-lists. In fact, from your statistics, I can tell you that we actually have more people subscribed to uug-list than we have listed as members on the website. We currently have 314 members on uug-list, and 185 on newbies (there is likely some overlap there, but regardless, it shows a large number on the lists). If there is interest, I would be willing to support additional lists dealing with issues related to Linux/OSS. However, those proposing an additional list would need to provide some sort of explanation for why they would like an additional list. I do not want to have a situation where everybody runs off into their separate lists, and doesn't discuss issues on the main list. However, at the same time, I can see that a lot of benefit could be gained by having separate lists for different topics. 3) If elected, I would be willing to consider any suggestions coming from either the active or the lurking membership of the UUG. I would like to ensure that needs are being met, and that everybody is gaining from their membership in the UUG. This club is really about its members, not its presidency. -- Erin Sharmahd [EMAIL PROTECTED] CS Student Unix Users Group PGP Fingerprint: F352 FF41 EA0A 67E4 566B 3B5B E65A D3DC 083E 9336
