If the problem is in windows too, it might be a plugin issue.  I have
never used the mplayer plugins for firefox in Linux, but I've had
weird sound plugin issues in Windows.  Other than to check your
plugins, I wouldn't know much else to tell you (even which plugin to
check) unless we knew what filetypes the sound files were -- .mp3,
.wav, etc...
