alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

My snes emulator says that /dev/dsp doesn't exist but it points to dsp0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 9 2007-01-06 12:56 /dev/dsp -> /dev/dsp0

xmms pops up an err msg box
Couldn't open audio
Please check that your sound card is configured properly
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other program is blocking the sound card

It stopped working when I installed mplayer, which wanted to use alsam but
opening the sound device failed. Sound still works from windows.

Are you getting any errors, or does it just not work? I know this
sounds dumb, but I'm just saying it because I've done it myself a few
times... Have you checked the volume levels? What does 'alsamixer' show?
