"It was powerful. It was intentional, it looked to me," said Jim Burgess, who called 911 when his 27-year-old neighbor ran to him for help early this morning, covering his face with his hands. "This was meant to do harm." The explosion, which spewed some type of chemical onto the man, caused the emergency department at United Memorial Hospital to shut down for most of the day for decontamination after the man was taken there. Authorities later learned the chemical was some type of highly concentrated fertilizer compound. Burgess said he looked at the device before police arrived, describing it as a wooden "potato" box that had some type of PVC pipe inside and a metal mechanism below that. Burgess and neighbors in the Arloa Drive area were eventually evacuated from their homes until the Michigan State Police bomb squad could retrieve the box and make sure it would not explode again.
