LJUBLJANA, December 4 (Itar-Tass) -- The settlement of Balkan problems “should
be done in the context of the regional and European situation and based on the
Helsinki Final Act,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after Sunday
negotiations with Slovenian Foreign Minister and OSCE Chairman-in-Office
Dimitrij Rupel.

“We hope that the OSCE ministerial conference will show this attitude at the
Monday debates on the Balkan issues,” he said.

Lavrov said that the positions of Russia and Slovenia generally coincided in
that issue. “Slovenia is doing a great job in the OSCE. It has managed to
refresh the organization and launch debates on ways to make the OSCE more
fitting to modern conditions,” he said.

The minister said his negotiations with Rupel and Slovenian Prime Minister
Janez Jansa were very efficient. He also said that he would meet with Slovenian
President Janez Drnovsek.
