EU discord on Kosovo issue persists, intensifies

14.12.2007, 14.44

BRUSSELS, December 14 (Itar-Tass) - Cyprus, Greece, Slovakia and Romania
continue to press for the settlement of the future Kosovo status within the
framework of the United Nations, Brussels sources said on the eve of the
beginning of the second day of work of the EU winter summit.
Thus, European sources noted, the number of countries doubting the necessity of
settling the Kosovo problem in a narrower format that includes Brussels,
Washington and Pristina has grown.
An unexpectedly compromise variant of the final document of the summit was
issued as a result of this. Itar-Tass learnt from official sources that
although the document notes that the negotiating process between Belgrade and
Pristina is fully exhausted and reached a stalemate, however it does not
contain a proposal to support the possible unilateral proclamation of Kosovo
independence.
