GRANTING KOSOVO INDEPENDENCE IS THE WAY TO UNIVERSAL
CHAOS

-Proclamation of Kosovo’s independence is the way to
universal chaos. There are few countries in the
Balkans and in Europe as a whole which do not face
outbursts of separatism.

A format of the would-be UN Security Council session
on Kosovo is discussed today in the UN headquarters.

The session scheduled for Wednesday, the 16th, will
consider report of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on
the situation in the Serb region.

Opinions differ on the regime of work of the UN
Security Council session. The Russian delegation, for
one, insists that the forthcoming session should be
open.

As for some Western states, they prefer to consider
Mr. Ban Ki-moon’s report behind closed doors.

If their demand is not satisfied they are prepared to
insist that equal opportunities should be granted to
representatives of Serbia and Kosovo Albanians to be
present at the session which runs counter to
international norms since only a UN member-state
enjoys such right. As for Kosovo, it is not a UN
member.

There is something that is much more meaningful behind
the differences of procedure: two points of view exist
on the status of Serbia’s historical region with
predominately Albanian population at present.

The United States, Great Britain, France and some of
their partners favour Kosovo’s independence since,
they claim, the talks between the parties to the
conflict have not been crowned with success.

Russia stands for continuation of the talks between
Belgrade and Pristina and a search of a compromise.

According to the chairman of the Russian State Duma’s
International Relations Committee Konstantin Kosachev,
there is something that is much more important than
Kosovo’s future behind those two approaches. Here is
what he says.

What is most important for the West is to have its own
way, and so it is prepared to disregard international
law and the opinion of the parties to the conflict.

As for Russia, it protects the interests of the Serb
minority in Kosovo. Russia bears in mind prospects for
a peaceful settlement of other, similar conflicts.

And certainly it defends the supremacy of
international law which must not be trampled.

Proclamation of Kosovo’s independence is the way to
universal chaos. There are few countries in the
Balkans and in Europe as a whole which do not face
outbursts of separatism.

If Kosovo’s unilaterally proclaimed sovereignty is
recognized, a peaceful settlement of ethnic conflicts
in the world will become ever more complicated.
