Norway tries Bosnian Muslim for war crimes

A court in Norway began the landmark trial on Wednesday of a Bosnian Muslim
accused of war crimes against Serb civilians in 1992 during the war in
former Yugoslavia, officials said

It is the first war crimes trial in Norway since those after World War Two
for Nazi collaboration. The 42-year-old man, who came to Norway in 1993 as
an asylum-seeker and obtained Norwegian citizenship in 2001, is charged with
assaulting, imprisoning and torturing civilians as a member of the Croatian
Defence Forces.

Some of the crimes in the indictment took place at the Dretelj prison camp
in southern Bosnia.

Norway introduced legislation in March this year enabling war crimes trials
to be held in Norwegian courts even if the events concerned took place
outside the country.
