As of midnight, January 21, the new armed formation has started functioning in
Kosmet – the Kosovo Security Forces, whose establishing was strongly condemned
by representatives of the Republic of Serbia, as well as of Serbs in the
Province. During visits to Paris, Ljubljana and Rome, Foreign Minister Vuk
Jeremic has gained support of his collocutors for the continuation of Serbia’s
European integrations. The report on the events in the Serbian political scene
prepared by Djuro Malobabic.

Serbian President Boris Tadic has sent a protest letter to secretary generals
of NATO and UN, due to the forming of the Kosovo Security Forces, it has been
confirmed by Head of the Diplomacy Vuk Jeremic. He has reminded that the
establishing of those forces represents the violation of UN Security Council
Resolution 1244, and stressed that Serbia will use diplomatic and legal tools
in the defense of that document. Jeremic has expressed regret over the fact
that by participating in the organization of the Kosovo Security Forces, NATO
has contributed to the realization of an element from the plan of Martti
Ahtisaari. President Tadic has stated that Belgrade authorities see the forming
of the new armed organization as unacceptable, as they believe the
demilitarization of the southern province is the only way to create conditions
for the safety of all Kosmet citizens. The President told the B92 TV that
Serbia must not renounce the policy of territorial integrity defense and the
continuation of European integration process, so with that goal in view, the
state needs to do everything in its power. Tadic has stressed that Serbia has
not strayed from the European road even for one millimeter, but added that
there is not price for giving up Kosmet. While assessing that in the future it
is possible to have the European integrations stipulated by the recognition of
Kosmet independence, he said that as a head of the state he will never accept
that blackmail.

“France is one of great allies of Serbia in its striving to join the EU as soon
as possible”, stated Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic after the talks with his
French counterpart Bernard Couchner, held in Paris. Jeremic has underlined that
this year must be a year of integrations for Serbia and all other states in the
Balkans. During the past week, he has also visited Slovenia and Italy, where
the hosts have given their full support to Serbia in the process of its
European integrations.

In discussion with EU Ambassador Trio in Belgrade, Assembly Speaker Slavica
Djukic-Dejanovic has expressed belief that in this year there will be expected
progress in Serbia’s approach to the Union. She reminded that the new
parliament composition had passed the Stabilization and Association Agreement,
along with a set of some 50 laws necessary for the harmonization with European
legal standards, as well as for the inclusion of our country to the “white
Schengen list”.
