Power cut-off for Serbian Orthodox monastery of Zociste in Kosmet

June 12, 2009

The Eparchy of Raska and Prizren of the Serbian Orthodox Church has
announced that elecricity has been cut off for the monastery of Zociste,
near Orahovac, in Kosmet. They assessed this is another form of pressure
on Serbian Orthodox priests to leave the Serbian sanctity. Most Albanian
people in that region do not pay bills, so that cannot be the reason for
power cut-off. Zociste is one of the most threatened Serbian monasteries
in Kosmet. It was attacked by Albanian extremists in 1998 and was
completely destroyed in 1999. Its restoration began in October 2004, but
KFOR suspended it in 2005, explaining local Albanians are opposing it.
