BELGRADE -- Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Koštunica said
that the Vojvodina statute proposal is unconstitutional and urges separatism.

He also said that the goal of the statute is to create “a state within a state.”

“After all the misfortune that has occurred to our people, the ruling regime
now with its irresponsibility and completely irrational policies is creating
divisions between Serbia and Vojvodina,” Koštunica told the Beta news agency.

He said that according to the new statute, the Serbian embassy in Brussels is
not good enough, because there are jobs that the Serbian Foreign Ministry
cannot do for Vojvodina, so the province will have to open its own headquarters
abroad.

The DSS leader added that Serbia “will have two governments in the future, two
national academies, Latin letters being used in Vojvodina as the basis for
forming a new identity, which all leads to a special separatist character of
the Vojvodina statute.”

Koštunica said the decree for the referendum for the territory of Vojvodina is
very dangerous for the integrity of the country, because it can be interpreted
as the implementation of a special territorial integrity for Vojvodina in
relation to Serbia.

“That is why there is a great amount of responsibility on the MPs of the
Serbian parliament who have to give the final word on the statute. It is up to
the MPs to make a decision on whether to defend the interests of the people and
reject the statute, or serve party interests and become participators in the
disassembling of the state,” Koštunica said.
