IndiGo inducts India’s first Airbus A321XLR

Fast-growing IndiGo has welcomed India’s first Airbus A321XLR to its fleet,
with CEO Pieter Elbers calling the event “an important milestone as we prepare
to redefine long-haul travel for India.”

The airline plans to press the 195-seat aircraft into service on flights from
Mumbai to Athens on January 23, followed a day later by a Delhi-Athens jaunt.
Both routes will be served thrice weekly with the twinjet.

The first of forty A321XLRs destined for IndiGo, this dual-class A321XLR
(registration VT-NLA) has been kitted out with seats from Recaro Aircraft
Seating, including generously pitched R5 recliners up front. MORE

Service oddities mar otherwise solid American JFK-HND flight

American Airlines' addition of a nonstop linking Tokyo Haneda with JFK, plus an
appealing miles redemption rate, was all I needed to come back to AA.

Having flown a wide range of airlines between New York and Tokyo in recent
years I knew the #PaxEx bar was very high. Japan Airlines and ANA, both world
class airlines with excellent service, operate their most premium aircraft on
the route. Even my experience on United in 2023 was top notch.

American currently operates the route with the Boeing 787-9, but not its newly
inducted, premium-heavy -9P version. The hard and soft product, and the meals
were solid on my flight, but service oddities marred the experience,
underscoring yet again the importance of cabin crew to PaxEx. MORE

Removal of lie-flat seats would slash airline emissions: study

Packing more passengers into the most fuel-efficient aircraft and eliminating
premium seating could reduce global aviation emissions by as much as
three-quarters, a new study has suggested.

The study, which was co-led by the University of Oxford, analyzed data from
almost 30 million commercial flights in 2023 and found “enormous variability”
in per-passenger carbon-dioxide emissions. MORE

Op-Ed: A sustainable future for aircraft teardown in China

Airlines across China are navigating escalating maintenance costs, ongoing shop
visit availability issues, and long-term and structural supply chain
constraints. New parts remain expensive and, in many cases, are difficult to
secure. Geopolitical tensions and tariffs continue to influence material flows.
Against that backdrop, operators are looking for lower-cost solutions that keep
aircraft flying, protect asset value, and support long-term resilience.

That’s where Used Serviceable Material (USM) is beginning to play a far greater
role. Recycling of cabin interiors, carbon fibre composites and other
specialised materials still require deeper industry cooperation, AerFin SVP
Asia-Pacific explains in an Op-Ed. MORE

Qatar Airways becomes first to bring Starlink to 787s

Qatar Airways has become the first carrier in the world to bring SpaceX’s
Starlink Ku-band Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite-supported inflight
connectivity to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with the oneworld alliance member
revealing today that three 787-8s are now flying with the service.

The 787 has unique retrofit requirements due to its composite airframe. As
such, Boeing developed new technology to ensure that electronically steerable
antennas (ESAs), including Starlink’s phased array kit, can be efficiently
integrated with the Dreamliner. MORE

AA begins phased rollout of free Wi-Fi including for new 787s

American Airlines is making good on its commitment to launch free Wi-Fi for
loyalty members, with a phased rollout now in motion in partnership with AT&T.
Notably, the US major intends to bring the complimentary service to its new
Boeing 787-9 and 787-8 twinjets.

“We launched our free Wi-Fi, sponsored by AT&T, today,” an American
spokesperson confirms. Free high-speed Wi-Fi will roll out across “100% of our
narrowbody and dual-class regional fleets, and by early spring, it will be
