Airlines

United Airlines is going dark for 2-3 hours this week -flights are already
pre-canceled

Next week, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, United Airlines will be
taking most of its systems offline for a controlled restart and cutover window
for their SHARES reservation system. Here’s what they’re telling their own
travelers internally. Some other communications show the window as 1:30 a.m. to
5:00 a.m. rather than just 1:55 a.m. to 4. It’s framed as a “technology upgrade
which will restart our systems” to maintain “better functionality and
reliability.”

American moves to win back gates at O'Hare

American Airlines isn’t wasting any time in seeking to win back gates it lost
last year at O’Hare International Airport. The Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier
notified Chicago aviation officials that it wants to start the annual process
of re-allocating the gates that airlines use to park aircraft while passengers
board and disembark. Under a new lease agreement between the carriers and the
city that was signed in 2018, the gates are subject to a use-it-or-lose-it
provision. The city awards gate space based on the amount of flying done by
each carrier during the previous year. John Pletz/Crain’s Chicago Business

Man allegedly steals plane, lands it at airport

FBI agents arrested a Los Angeles County man who allegedly stole a plane in
Washington and flew it to an airport in Corona. The agency’s LAX Joint
Terrorism Task Force arrested Christian Estoque, 39, for suspicion of operating
an unregistered aircraft. Investigators said that Estoque is not a registered
pilot. In the criminal complaint filed on Wednesday, investigators believe
Estoque and his girlfriend stole a plane from Auburn Municipal Airport on Jan.
3. Authorities believe the couple tampered with the aircraft’s transponder to
conceal their flight path.

Ontario - Taipei route nears one million passengers

China Airlines was the first Taiwan-based airline to operate from Ontario
International Airport and has served the Ontario–Taipei route for nearly eight
years, now offering daily nonstop service to Taipei. The route has become a
preferred alternative for travelers across Southern California and the Inland
Empire, providing direct access to Asia without the congestion at larger
coastal gateways. To commemorate the milestone, China Airlines will partner
with the Ontario International Airport Authority on February 2, 2026, to host a
special celebration with free giveaways at the departure gate of Flight CI-023
from Ontario to Taipei.

Aviation groups continue to push back on Van Nuys landing fee

Despite a final plea from a coalition of national aviation associations to
delay the vote, the Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) in Los Angeles
unanimously voted to approve a new landing fee at Van Nuys Airport to be
collected starting in March. AOPA, along with CalPilots, the Experimental
Aircraft Association, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, NATA
(formerly known as the National Air Transportation Association), the National
Business Aviation Association, and Vertical Aviation International, continues
to push back against Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) over a new landing fee
at Van Nuys Airport, arguing that the proposal was built on flawed methodology
and a lack of transparency.

United to offer year-round flights between Palm Springs and LAX

United Airlines will now offer year-round flights between Palm Springs and Los
Angeles International Airport, a move the airline says will increase
connectivity between the desert and LAX's massive amount of international
flights. The airline, which had previously offered flights between Palm Springs
and LAX only seasonally, says it will now offer two daily flights each
direction on the route during peak travel seasons and one per day at slower
times.

Aviation Safety

US to require planes to keep 25 hours of cockpit voice recordings under FAA rule

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Friday finalized a rule to require
cockpit voice recorders to retain 25 hours of data for all new passenger
airplanes in 2027 compared with the current two-hour loop. The National
Transportation Safety Board has been pushing for the change since 2018, and the
United States is behind much of the world in the requirement for commercial
planes. The voice recorder captures transmissions and sounds in the cockpit,
including the pilots’ voices and engine noises and can be crucial in
understanding why airplane crashes occur.

FAA safety alert warns airlines about rising risk of space debris

As if weather fluctuations and crowded skies weren’t enough, commercial
airlines now have to watch what’s happening above them. In early January 2026,
the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued a new Safety Alert for
Operators - known as SAFO 26001 - warning airlines and flight crews about the
rising risks linked to space launches and rocket reentries. With more
spacecraft going up and coming back down, the agency says rare but serious
“catastrophic failures” could send debris raining through the atmosphere,
creating unexpected hazards for aircraft.

Government Shutdown

After air travel chaos, FAA shuts down - again

The Federal Aviation Administration is shut down - less than three months after
the last spending interruption prompted an air travel nightmare for American
flyers. This time, the appropriations lapse could be short-lived and contained
to a weekend, meaning serious disruption is unlikely at the FAA. But yet
another shutdown, so soon after weeks of frustration for travelers this past
fall, prompted concern - even before it began - from the airline industry and
the union that represents air traffic controllers, who continue to work without
pay during funding stalemates.
