American, Alaska latest U.S. airlines to hike bag fees as fuel costs spike

American Airlines and Alaska Air Group are the latest U.S. carriers to
raise fees for checked baggage, coming as operators look to offset higher
jet fuel costs. Going into effect on April 9, American will increase those
fees for domestic and short-haul international travel by an extra $10 for
the first and second bag. Fees tick up another $5 for domestic travelers in
basic economy starting on May 18. Additional changes are ahead for its most
basic fare class; starting in mid-May, seat selection for the lowest-tier
main cabin product will require an extra fee and, even for those with
status, travelers in basic economy will be ineligible for complimentary
upgrades. Christine Boynton/Aviation Week

American Airlines set to resume US flights to Venezuela as soon as April 30

American Airlines said on Thursday it aims to resume flights to Venezuela
as soon as April 30 after winning ‌approval from the U.S. Transportation
Department last month. The airline said it plans to resume services to
Venezuela for the first time in more than six years, offering a daily
service between Miami and Caracas on an Embraer 175 through Envoy, its
wholly owned regional subsidiary, pending additional government
approvals. David

Airline pilots fear retribution over refusing to fly in Middle East,
aviators' group says

Airline pilots who have safety concerns about flying in the Middle East
during the Iran war have told a global aviators' ‌union group they fear
blowback ranging from lost pay to being fired if they refuse assignments,
its president Ron Hay said. Pilots from Lebanon to India have voiced
"widespread" concerns they could face sanctions if they do not fly in often
unpredictable conditions where airspace can close with little notice due to
missile or drone strikes, according to the head of the International
Federation of Air Line Pilot' Associations. "There is an underlying fear
of retribution," Hay told Reuters in his first interview on the matter. Allison

FAA investigates close call between Frontier plane and trucks at LAX

The Federal Aviation Administration launched an investigation after a
Frontier Airlines plane nearly collided with two trucks on an LAX taxiway.
No one was injured during the close call, but the pilot appeared shaken and
worried while describing it to air traffic controllers. "We just had two
trucks cut us off," the pilot said in ATC audio. "We had to slam on the
brakes to not hit them." The plane was traveling at low speeds, likely
giving the pilots enough time to avoid the collision. "It happened so
fast," the pilot said in ATC audio. "I have to go check on the flight
attendants in the back. It was real close, closest I've ever seen." Hunter

Major delays hit BART after train-control equipment problem affects travel
to San Francisco International Airport

A problem with BART’s equipment Thursday caused long system-wide delays and
forced commuters to the San Francisco International Airport to seek other
options after the agency lost service between it’s South San Francisco
station and the airport. BART resumed its full service on the system about
about 11:20 a.m. after correcting equipment having to do with train
control. The issue caused major delays on the system for most of the
morning. BART first announced the problem and a 10-minute delay at 8:23
a.m. and issued an advisory about 20 minutes after that. Rick Hurd/Bay Area

High-Speed Rail

High-speed rail could run from S.F. to L.A. by 2040. All it needs is $126
billion

It could cost $126 billion to build high-speed rail from downtown San
Francisco to Los Angeles, according to a draft business plan released by
the state last month. The figure, buried in a table in the plan’s technical
supporting document, is nearly triple the original sticker price of $45
billion that was put to voters in 2008, when California passed a bond
measure to fund the 800-mile rail network. Since then, officials have blown
deadlines, fought lawsuits, debated new funding strategies and drastically
scaled back the project to focus on a segment in the Central Valley. All
the while, construction costs ballooned. Rachel Swan/San Francisco Chronicle

DHS Shutdown

Confusion surrounds Trump effort to pay TSA, DHS; some could see last
paycheck Friday

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is warning its employees that
Friday’s paycheck could be their last until Congress acts to fund the
department and end the record-long partial shutdown - but questions remain
over whether that warning extends to Transportation Security Administration
workers. TSA employees last week began receiving back pay after President
Trump signed a March 27 executive order directing the DHS to find funds to
compensate them for their unpaid work since the shutdown began Feb. 14. Sarah

US House to vote on aviation safety bill next week

The U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote next week on a sweeping
aviation safety reform bill to address dozens of recommendations issued
after a January 2025 collision ‌of an American Airlines regional jet and a
U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter that killed 67 people. Two House committees
on March 26 voted unanimously on the legislation to require installation of
collision-prevention technologies on all military aircraft by 2031, except
fighters, bombers and drones, and establish requirements for equipping
collision-mitigation technologies for civilian airplanes and helicopters. David

FedEx reaches tentative wage deal with pilots after years of talks

FedEx and a union representing more than 5,000 of its pilots reached a
tentative deal on Wednesday, paving ‌the way for wage increases after years
of negotiations. FedEx's management and the Air Line Pilots Association
(ALPA) have been in talks since May 2021. Under the tentative agreement,
pilots' hourly wages would rise by about 40% in 2026, followed by an annual
increases of 3% from 2028 through 2030, the union said. Captains would also
receive up to $150,000 in retroactive pay missed during negotiations, while
first officers will get up to $102,500. Reuters

2028 L.A. Olympics

L.A. officials raise alarms over crippling Olympic costs: ‘Bankruptcy
cannot be the legacy’

Los Angeles officials are expressing growing fears that taxpayers and the
city treasury could be hit with a round of crippling costs to support the
2028 Olympic Games if the city doesn’t ink a rigorous deal to assure a
“zero-cost” Games. Some city officials have long been concerned that
taxpayers could be left with massive bills if the Olympics don’t generate
the income organizers have promised. Delays in finalizing a deal between
City Hall and the Olympics committee have heightened those tensions. The
exact costs to L.A. and other local governments remain unknown, as
officials wait to hear from LA28 and federal security agencies about
exactly what services they will need. James Rainey/Los Angeles Times

Economy

L.A.’s population is falling, could ‘haunt us for decades’

Long the epicenter of population growth in the United States, Los Angeles
is slowly losing its people because of a series of demographic shifts that
experts say could have profound implications for the county if trends
continue. High housing prices have led a growing number of residents to
leave the region for more affordable parts of the country. Immigration -
long a pipeline for population growth - has ebbed significantly under a
federal crackdown. A rapidly aging population is adding to the concern over
how these declines will affect the local economy. Jenny Jarvie/Los Angeles
