Hi, if you haven't heard, George Stewart on the city council is resigning to serve a mission. There's 1 year left in his 4 year term and the city council has to pick someone to replace him.

There are 17 candidates (or more correctly applicants) for the position.

* Since we can't vote -- there's no special election -- I strongly encourage you to become acquainted with the candidates and to tell the council who you would like to see as the replacement. * Please email the council your input at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>
Members of the council each get a copy of any email sent to this address.

Below is a list of the candidates.
(I expect to have a list of their email addresses/phone numbers and possibly questionnaire answers soon.)

    * David Acheson
    * James Anderson
    * John Beesley
    * David Cabanilla
    * Dean Cofer
    * Mark Hathaway
    * S. Kim Hodges
    * R. Nicolaas Leydsman
    * James R. Mathis
    * Charles McElwee
    * Melanie McCoard
    * Neil Mitchell
    * Coy Dee Porter
    * David Starling
    * Richard P. Valgardson
    * Vernon K. Van Buren
    * Alvin Lindsay Wiblin

And if you haven't been following the news, there will be a presentation made by each of these candidates today from 3:00pm to 4:00pm on Channel 17 (_archives of it will be posted online later_). Each of them will have 3 minutes to present their case as to why they should be picked.

/I haven't decided yet who I think the top pick is but I know who's not on my list /-- Dave Acheson --
he's been very vocal in support of double standards in zoning! :(
He supports double standards that allow unlimited numbers of related people to jam pack a house and cause major parking and noise problems for their neighbors YET 4 or 5 unrelated friends can't live in a large house with parking spaces for each of them OFF the street, on the property! Don't get me started -- the lack of charity in such a viewpoint completely baffles me!!

_*The council has to decide by next Tuesday the 20th. So please get informed and give your input to the council soon! *_Email the council your input at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>

P.S. here's an article from the Daily Herald on the candidates:

Friday, 09 January 2009
Ace Stryker - Daily Herald More than 20 Provo residents (some withdrew so now it's 17) have applied to fill the Municipal Council seat George Stewart vacated this month, including neighborhood chairs, community activists and former council members.

Stewart is leaving to serve a mission with his wife for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico City. His replacement will be appointed by the council at its Jan. 20 meeting. He said the leading contenders for the job are Coy Porter, a former Provo fire chief who ran unsuccessfully for a seat in 2007, and Dave Acheson, co-chairman of the Wasatch neighborhood. The council has spent the most time discussing those candidates, he said. Other big names include Mark Hathaway, who served on the council until losing his seat to Cynthia Dayton in 2003, and Karl Thalman, who was a council member in the 1990s and lost a bid for mayor to Lewis Billings in 1997.

"It's an excellent field -- incredible, quite frankly," Stewart said. "I think that you have people that can certainly fill my shoes."

Neighborhood chairs Lindsay Wiblin of Carterville, Dave Cabanilla of Riverbottoms, and Kay Van Buren of Grandview South have also thrown their hats in the ring. Joining them are David Starling, who lost a bid to represent state House District 62 to incumbent Chris Herrod last year; John Beesley, a downtown business owner who opposed the creation of a tax district to fund the Provo Downtown Alliance in 2007; Charles McElwee, who fought the Joaquin parking permit program as a BYU student last year.

Councilman Steve Turley joked that interest in the position has been surprisingly high given the field during the last round of city general elections in 2007.

"When it comes to elections we're few and far between, but when it comes to appointments, we get plenty of people," he said.

One applicant who claims to have submitted her name with no real hope of being chosen is Melanie McCoard, a vocal resident who has run for a council seat before and regularly brings up issues at council meetings. She said she's running to bring attention to problems she thinks need attention, including zoning enforcement, city employee bonuses and development.

"I am trying to define the discussion," she said. "I take every opportunity."

McCoard said Stewart leaves a big hole as he departs, and she isn't sure whether any names on the prospective list could fill it.

"Right now, the council needs a champion," she said.

The council will be interviewing candidates through Jan. 19. It will appoint a new member at a meeting Jan. 20, and that person will be sworn in that night. However, if the council can't agree on someone before Feb. 5, it will vote again between the two candidates who received the most votes initially. Failing that, Stewart's successor will be chosen by lot, according to state law.
