I'm trying to use NewsClipper on my ISP's server. I do not
have root access to the system so the amount of changes I can
make are very limited.

The system is a RedHat Linux machine (i686) running 2.0.35.
It is also running perl 5.004_04 built for i386-linux.

I first tried with 1.20 who seem to require perl 5.005. The
documentation mentionned 5.004 so I tried anyway. I managed
to get some of it working but I was getting tons of parsing
errors. I anyone managed to get it going with the errors,
that would be great.

I tried using 1.17 but to no avail. I can't get it work
right.

If I set NEWSCLIPPER:

    News Clipper could not load your system-wide
    configuration file
    "/home/charlesg/local/etc/NewsClipper.cfg". Make sure
    your NEWSCLIPPER environment variable is
    set correctly. The error is:
    No such file or directory
    Undefined subroutine &main::DEBUG called at
    /home/charlesg/local/bin/NewsClipper.pl line 704.
    END failed--cleanup aborted.

If I don't:

    News Clipper could not load personal configuration file
    "/home/charlesg/.NewsClipper/NewsClipper.cfg"
    because of the following error: No such file or directory
    "handlerlocations" in NewsClipper.cfg must be non-empty.

So than I tried with the -c $HOME/local/etc/NewsClipper.cfg

    Undefined subroutine &main::dequote called at
    /home/charlesg/local/bin/NewsClipper.pl line 208.
    Undefined subroutine &main::DEBUG called at
    /home/charlesg/local/bin/NewsClipper.pl line 704.
    END failed--cleanup aborted.

Finally I tried with -c $HOME/.NewsClipper.cfg and I got the
same results.

 - I have a $HOME/local/etc/NewsClipper.cfg file
 - I have a $HOME/.NewsClipper/NewsClipper.cfg file
 - modulepath is set to $HOME/local/lib/perl5
    which is where the script installed the NewsClipper
    directory with the modules (I gave $HOME/local as an
    install path).

Did anyone manage to install and run NewsClipper 1.17 on a
perl 5.004 linux system.

or

Did anyone manage to install and run NewsClipper 1.20 on a
perl 5.004 linux system.

I know upgrading Perl would help a lot but...

Thanks everyone.

   You can lead a mule to water, but you can't make him drink.
   However, if you shoot a couple of uncooperative mules, the
   rest tend to get pretty thirsty.
