Mr Pulsifer,
I'm not sure, although I'm speaking on my behalf only, that
OpenOffice.org should be comfortable with your product and your brand name.
First, OpenOffice Technology is very, very close (too close?) to our
brand name, OpenOffice.org .
Second, your product falls short of being Open Source. Although this is
not a crime at all, selling a product called "OpenOffice-Entreprise" for
400 $ may make many people in our community tick.
I have put the Marketing project leads and our community manager in copy
of this mail as well. Although I'll be comfortable with including your
annoucement in our newsletter, I wish to have their opinions concerning
the questions I have raised here.
Regards,
Charles-H. Schulz,

& Newsletter Editor's team, OpenOffice.org

Hello OpenOffice.org Newsletter,
I am writing to alert you to a new product that will probably be of interest
to a large number of your readers.
Many organizations use standard Microsoft tools such as Active Directory,
Group Policy and Microsoft Management Console to manage their desktop
computers. These are familiar tools to Windows' system administrators, and
allow them to perform common operations such as software installation and
configuration from a central console.
The OpenOffice.org office suite does not offer the ability to be managed
using these tools. To date, this has hindered or prevented many
organizations from adopting OpenOffice.org as their standard office suite.
Our company, Open Office Technology, Inc., released this week the first
enterprise management solution for OpenOffice.org. The product is called
OpenOffice-Enterprise.
OpenOffice-Enterprise allows a system administrator to manage OpenOffice
settings on all Windows machines in a network using standard Microsoft
tools, including Group Policy, Active Directory and Microsoft Management
Console.
OpenOffice-Enterprise provides access to over 25,000 configuration settings
in the OpenOffice.org office suite. Typical uses would be to enforce
enterprise policies for file formats, directory paths, language, fonts,
meta-data values, menu and command access, and more. A system administrator
can set mandatory values that cannot be changed by users, as well as default
values that a user can override. Different settings can be applied to
different groups of users and computers. Changes are propagated to the
desktop systems in minutes.
OpenOffice-Enterprise can play a crucial role in all stages of OpenOffice
deployment. Prior to application rollout, OpenOffice-Enterprise allows
interactive browsing of OpenOffice.org configuration settings. A system
administrator can change and test the operation of each setting. Once the
desired settings have been determined, OpenOffice-Enterprise eases rollout
by deploying configuration policies together with the application.
Following installation, OpenOffice-Enterprise facilitates reliable
reconfiguration. Changes can be isolated to a small group of computers
until they are thoroughly tested. In the event of a security threat,
OpenOffice-Enterprise can also be used to rapidly disable vulnerable
features until systems are patched or anti-virus signatures updated.
Finally, OpenOffice-Enterprise makes upgrades easy. When a new version of
the OpenOffice.org suite is released, a system administrator can simply
install the update. Existing configuration settings will continue to be
enforced, without any additional effort.
OpenOffice-Enterprise can be downloaded from our website at
http://OpenOfficeTechnology.com, and installed on up to five computers and
without charge for the purpose of testing and evaluation.
Licensing is $400 per year for 100 users, and $2 per year for each
additional user. Full support is included.
Our website also includes instructions for performing a network installation
of OpenOffice, as well as an OpenOffice Configuration KnowledgeBase. These
resources are located at http://OpenOfficeTechnology.com/documentation
If anyone would like more information about OpenOffice-Enterprise or how it
might help them deploy the OpenOffice.org suite, they can contact us for
further information at http://OpenOfficeTechnology.com/contact.
Thank you,
Allen Pulsifer
