Subject: Grammar check

Louis,

This is to announce that the Brazilian OpenOffice.org project, through
the efforts of Prof. Carlos Menezes, has made available the first
Grammar check in Brazilian Portuguese for OpenOffice.org. It is a
pluggable module written in Perl/Java that can be used from version
1.1.x as well as the 2.0.x versions.

The project, named CoGrOo (Corretor Gramatical acoplável ao OpenOffice)
was a project sponsored by FINEP (a Brazilian Government research
financing institution) and developed by Prof. Carlos Menezes' team at
USP - Universidade de São Paulo and by the Centro Universitário
SENAC-SP.

We are all very proud of Prof. Menezes' work and are sure that this
first release will make OOo an even more adopted platform in Brazil.

Best regards,

And, from Carlos Menezes,

Releasing CoGrOO 1.0

We are happy to announce the first version of CoGrOO (Grammar Checker to OpenOffice), the only open source grammar checker to Portuguese language.

This project was sponsored by FINEP (Free Software Edictal/2003), University of S„o Paulo and University Center Senac-SP, and is hosted at project incubator of FAPESP. This project has lasted two and a half years and had 12 collaborators.

CoGrOO runs with OpenOffice.org (OOo) 1.X and 2.0. It is multi- platform, running in Linux and Windows (other ports will come, because our grammar checker server was implemented in Perl and GUI, in java).

        Software can be download at:

Linux Version:
http://cogroo.incubadora.fapesp.br/portal/down/builds/ cogroo_installer_linux.bin

Windows Version:
http://cogroo.incubadora.fapesp.br/portal/down/builds/ cogroo_installer_windows.exe

Although it's easy to install, we are going to give some tips:

Linux:
1) OpenOffice cannot be running during installation process (nor the OOo Quick Initializator). 2) Make sure you have Perl and Java languages installed (install Sun's JRE instead of gcj/gij).
3) You need to have pt_br locale installed.
4) Download CoGrOO Linux version installer.
5) Make this file an executable; use the following command: chmod +x cogroo_installer_linux.bin
6) As root, invoke the installer: ./cogroo_installer_linux.bin
7) The installation process is fairly intuitive (Next, Next, Next....). The final part of this installation process takes some time; don't worry!

Windows:
1) OpenOffice cannot be running during installation process (nor the OOo Quick Initializator). 2) Make sure you have Perl and Java languages installed. Sun's JRE is available in www.javasoft.com, and ActivePerl in http:// www.activeperl.com/Products/Download/Download.plex?id=ActivePerl .
3) Download CoGrOO Windows version installer.
4) Run installer.
5) Remaining steps are very intuitive (Next, Next, Next....). The final part of this installation process takes some time; don't worry!
6) Reboot your machine!

        Frequently asked questions:

Does CoGrOO check other languages?
-Unfortunately, CoGrOO is ready to check texts in Portuguese only; but CoGrOO Team plans to extend it to languages like English, Spanish, etc.

Is it a free software project?
-Yes; its license is LGPL (2.1).
