I guess we can conclude that the two lonely cash cows, MS Windows and MS Office, have finally dried up. MS Vista looks financially, at best, like a repeat of Windows ME.

For our part, I guess it means specifically that OOo and others have taken
a large enough bite out of MS' Office market share that they have to play
the sw patent card -- aka self-destruct.

With ODF levelling the playing field, MS Office market share is starting to diminish. We've already seen negligable uptake of InfoPath or whatever the new version is called.

It's quite important at this time to point out two things. First, the FUD storm only affects the US market, not the European market, since sw patents are banned by the 1972 European Patent Convention and *not* applicable in the European community. Second, it is only through the *ongoing* hard work of the contless small businesses and organizations like the EFF, FFII, to name a few, that the software patent plague has been kept out of Europe. Expect at least two more rounds soon.
