Perfect Storm: Super typhoon Faxai is threatening North Pacific islands with winds of 250 kilometres per hour and waves up to 33 feet high, weather officials said. Guam remained on Typhoon Condition Three with local government officials cautioning residents to be prepared for the storm in case it changes direction. Saipan in the neighbouring Northern Mariana Islands was also on alert. Faxai was expected to make its closest approach to Guam by 5 a.m. Monday, passing 260 miles northeast of the island, said Genevieve Miller, National Weather Service meteorologist told the Pacific Daily News. As the typhoon approached the Mariana Islands on the weekend before Christmas, holiday shopping became intertwined with typhoon preparations, the Pacific Daily News reported.
