do you have the Appletalk ADSP extension in your system folder? This is often the culprit, especially with a new install of System 9. It should have been installed when you installed NCU, but check anyway. You might also check to see that Appletalk is listening on Ethernet and not an Airport card.
BTW, got my "new" Newton yesterday. It's a Newton Technology 2100, and it's in pristine shape. I'm hoping to use it for at least the four and a half years I got out of my other one!
