Actually, all the Unix-based connection programs just do package
installation. AFAIK, none of them can actually do any kind of
synchronization. The problem is that when the Newton establishes a
connection with the desktop, it sends some kind of query, in some
encrypted format, and if the desktop doesn't reply properly, with the
answer that the Newton is expecting, the Newton drops the connection.
Apple did provide developers with connection libraries (AKA DIL, or
Desktop Integration Library). When, as a developer, you were writing a
connection application, you would call some functions in that library
which, in turn, would take care of establishing the connection with the
Newton. Unfortunately, these libraries were offered for the Classic
MacOS, for 68K and PPC only. Since nobody besides Apple has the source,
we have to be able to reverse-engineer the current libraries to discover
that encrypted key sent by the Newton and discover what is the proper
reply. So, unless we can get there, we won't be able to have a full Mac
OS X connection utility.

On the positive side, some people are actually trying to "break" that
kinda protection.
